Personality

First and foremost, Haruka is a very flawed person who means well. This is the very basic gist of her, and should be kept in mind. She is a human girl exposed to inhuman things from a young age and taught to deal with said inhuman things for a living. It has had a deep effect on her, and that isn’t even touching the trauma from what got her current life started.

She is a reckless individual. It’s not without its consequences, either. Because she tends to charge into things without a plan, Resha has had to patch her up numerous times and she’s been possessed more than once. She’s like this because she can be, at times, self-destructive in her own ways without meaning to be. This self-destructive nature because she wonders why she’s alive combined with her own heroic “save all the people” streak is what causes her to leap before she looks and not be as careful as she needs to be.

That doesn’t mean Haruka’s not a good person! No, she does a lot of what she does in hopes of people living happily. She’d rather be hurt so others don’t have to lose someone like she lost her mother, or so they don’t have to deal with, like, vampire turf wars and the like. People should be free to live peaceful lives, so she’ll do her part in helping achieve that by dealing with all the nasty things.

Likewise, this doesn’t mean Haruka doesn’t make mistakes. Her main drive in this job, even though she does plenty to help others, is still to seek revenge for her mother’s death. It’s her biggest motivating factor. To this end, she can have a very short temper—especially when it comes to families being torn apart. She doesn’t suffer people who abuse their families and tends to fly off the handle at them.

As a note, Haruka can be quite naïve despite all she’s been through. She’ll try to continuously see the best in people and assume everyone is good by default. At the same time, she is not going to easily forgive—as seen with Cole Bryant. That said, she is naturally charismatic and outgoing with a normally laid-back and casual manner. She makes friends wherever she goes and has made a number of allies in the supernatural community just by being herself, including very influential ones such as the vampire in charge of over half of Clearwater.

Haruka is an extremely stubborn individual, and she doesn’t easily change her opinion. Once she’s made up her mind, there is no stopping her—for better or for worse. This includes her very, very strong opinion on people using others. Whether their intentions are good or not, she despises it and it’s a very fast way to get on her bad side. As an example, if she were to learn of, say, Dumbledore’s actions in Harry Potter, she’d very much not like the guy.

All that said, Haruka is clever and quick to think on her feet. She can come up with all sorts of zany and crazy solutions to problems, and they often work because she bewilders people into coming around. It’s won her a fair number of fights, that’s for sure. Which, as a point, she is only human, so she pretty much has to be just to survive her job—it’s a miracle she’s lasted as long as she has, really, until one sees her and her weird solutions in action.

Most of all, though, Haruka is very much a product of the trauma when she was small. She doesn’t really bond with humans, especially normal humans. She does have a few friends that are human, mind, but they tend to be just as entrenched in the supernatural as her. But she literally cannot comprehend a normal life as she can’t really remember it that well. On top of that, a surefire way to black her out with rage and drive her to berserk mode is to actually cause physical harm to her family. Her reaction to this is to screech and fly into a rage and just completely lose it and commit very violent acts. She has suffered one of these canonically, and she broke down in tears afterward and refused to leave her bed for a week.

Haruka is also a fairly spunky and sarcastic young woman. It is, frankly, how she deals. She is crass and easy-going, but her sarcastic streak is a mile wide and she’s got a very dark humorous streak. She jokes about death and such often, though it is entirely how she copes with her own trauma. That said, her spunk and sarcasm are defense mechanisms of their own. While she does have numerous friends, she lets very few people into her core where she is still very much a damaged little girl who witnessed her mother’s brutal murder.

She doesn’t get much time outside of her job. To be frank: she doesn’t really know how to function outside of it. Even if she’s not out on the streets at the moment, she is practicing her spells or with her gun so she stays sharp as a tack, or she’s expanding her repertoire of knowledge just in case. Her job is her life, and it doesn’t come with vacations. She wouldn’t know how to function without it, and would probably not know what to do at first if given lots of free time.

Despite that, she is highly energetic and very much extroverted. She just happens to meet all her social needs through her job as it requires heavy interaction with lots of beings. Her job is also laid back enough she can stop for a chat at the blood bar with some vampires for an hour—usually because she’s there on a stakeout or something anyway, or is waiting for a certain individual to show up or something like that. With the above in mind, since she considers this as being for her job, it wouldn’t occur to her that these are also things you can do outside of it. She doesn’t understand the concept of “just hanging out” anymore.

Haruka is not the kind of person who readily lets people see what she’s really feeling or thinking. Therefore, while she is outgoing and loves to talk about things, she ends up being quite the mystery. She has an unhealthy way of displaying emotions at times, because she’s rather force a smile and a laugh than let others worry about her. Couple this with her wish for revenge and her general lack of being able to function outside of her job, it’s pretty obvious just how broken Haruka is.

Evidence of this is especially her reactions to interactions that attempt to go beyond surface level. The harder someone tries to pry their way into her inner thoughts and feelings, the harder she’s going to push back. She actually becomes quite anxious an agitated when this is attempted, losing her sarcasm and her generally laid-back nature for a more biting and bitter exterior. Her temper becomes more apparent and she’s much more obvious in her annoyance, often just plain snapping at the person.

With that said, though, it is possible to work your way to the point that she’ll open up more. It’s a defense mechanism that she does this—so that no one gets hurt out of closeness to her. Loved ones are an obvious weak spot, and casual work acquaintances aren’t as likely to be targeted as, say, a boyfriend or a sister. To reach that inner core, though—the damaged and broken girl she is inside—one must be patient and allow things to move at her pace.

Haruka is basically just emotionally stunted and learned that you shut the world out so no one gets hurt. You don’t show your sadness or pain or worry for the sake of others, so that the situation seems one hundred percent under control. You smile and you laugh because otherwise you’re going to cry and that’s a weak spot that can be exploited. You don’t speak to other humans about the supernatural because they’re likely to think you crazy, and maybe you are, just a bit. There’s never any going back, only ever forward—no time for regrets because that’s one more moment in which something bad can happen to someone else. And most of all, you don’t give up and you let no one but your partner in.
